Get Ready to Edit with Augur

Augur Magazine is looking for an Assistant Editor!

Are you a Canlit enthusiast? A speculative fiction nerd? A compassionate, insightful editor? All of the above?

Then you’re a great fit for us. Apply to be an Assistant Editor with Augur Magazine, and join our passionate, all-volunteer team at Canada’s only recognized pro-paying SFF magazine.

Time commitment is 3-10 hours per week. 3-5 hours during off-production time, 5-10 hours during peak production time. Please note that every two years we run a Kickstarter that will require additional hours throughout that single month.

All Decembers are 100% offline for the team.

Tasks include:

  • Reading a minimum of 75 slush pieces during reading periods (12-16 pieces per week, over six weeks, twice per year)
  • Writing short evaluations and recommendations of longlist pieces, alongside the rest of the staff (Twice per year)
  • Attending and pitching at Issue Pitch Sessions (Twice per year)
  • Assistant Editing 1-2 pieces per issue alongside a lead editor (Fiction and/or poetry, depending on interest, twice per year)
  • Supporting the lead editor in engaging, gathering information from, and supporting our contributors (Twice per year)
  • Participating in editorial workshops with the Augur leadership team
  • Attending and participating in the Augur Magazine Literary Society AGM (Once per year)

  • Engaging regularly on social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) to support Augur Magazine and all of its contributors (Ongoing)
  • Attending and covering local literary events pertinent to Augur interests (Throughout the year, as available, with the Augur team)
  • Tabling at literary festivals and shows (As needed, 2-3 times per year)
  • Writing 2-4 blogs per year for the Augur Magazine blog
  • Depending on interest/skill: Supporting the Augur Managing Editor in developing process documentation and/or maintaining the Augur website (Ongoing)
  • Depending on interest/skill: Supporting the Publisher and Poetry Editor in the development of Augury, Augur’s first literary conference (Ongoing)

You belong on our team if:

  • You have experience reading and editing others’ work—whether as a beta reader, from writing groups & workshops, at student publications, with other publications, as a slush reader, as an agency assistant, or any other form of editorial work
  • Your priorities are compassion, care, and empathy, and you aspire to be the best literary community citizen you can be
  • You have an eagle eye for editorial work, and want to edit to make the writer’s work more what they intend it to be, rather than more what you see it as
  • You’re excited about growing Augur Magazine as a space in Canadian and Global literary communities
  • You want to lift up marginalized and under-represented voices, and are ready to think critically about what actionable steps need to be taken to make that happen
  • You’re Canadian, Indigenous, and/or living in Canada (non-citizens living in Canada more than welcome)
  • Bonus Points (although not a ton!): You’re living in Toronto/the GTA

We especially encourage applications from individuals who are: Indigenous, disabled, POC, of marginalized genders (including trans spectrum, nonbinary, 2S, and cis women), Black, LGBTQIA2S+, or otherwise under-represented and/or marginalized. Our team has lived experience along many of these lines, and we always welcome perspectives from any intersection of these identities. We’re so excited to meet our new teammates, and can’t wait to hear from you!
